The musical Beauty and the Beast made its Broadway debut in 1994, three years after the animated film of the same name became one of Disney's best-loved classics.
The fairy-tale plot begins when a cruel and heartless prince is turned into a beast, a spell which can only be broken when he learns "how to love, and be loved in return". When a shy girl named Belle ventures to his castle, the Beast's servants – who, in a mischievous touch certain to delight families, are themselves turning into household objects – are filled with fresh hope.
