The musical The Lion King is adapted from the animated Disney film of the same name, which became an instant household classic when it was released in 1994.
The Lion King tells the bewitching story of Simba, a young African lion learning his place in the "Circle of Life". Tricked by his evil uncle Scar into shouldering responsibility for his father's death, he flees his home in the Pride Lands.
He is saved by Timon and Pumbaa, a mischievous duo who teach him their own philosophy – Hakuna Matata, or no worries. As romance blossoms with his childhood friend Nala, will Simba find the courage to return to the Pride Lands as rightful King of the Jungle?
The show's eclectic score features hit songs from Hans Zimmer's original soundtrack alongside traditional African arrangements. A stellar cast of actors don animal costumes and manipulate giant puppets in a dazzling display of drama and dance which is guaranteed to thrill audiences young and old.
The Lion King was launched in Minnesota in 1997, where phenomenal success prompted a move to Broadway 3 months later. The show has been nominated for 11 Tony Awards, and international productions are currently running in England, Japan, Germany and China.
