The rock musical Rent is a gritty masterpiece which transplants Puccini's opera La Boheme into New York City's tough East Village neighborhood.
Punk rocker Roger and dancer Mimi fall in love, but the biggest threat to their relationship isn't tuberculosis – it's AIDS and heroin addiction. As they struggle to stay true to their ideals and pay the rent, every day of their brief lives is precious.
Rent features stellar performances from the most ethnically and sexually diverse cast on Broadway. An award-winning score is both heartrending and uplifting, and sensitively tackles issues including the AIDS epidemic, social injustice and one very angry landlord.
This must-see musical is a gripping tale of love against all odds which changed the face of American musical theatre forever.
Rent was composed and written by the late Jonathan Larsen. The musical premiered in New York in 1996, and swiftly moved to Broadway where it won "every possible award", including a Tony for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for drama. The show is the seventh longest-running on Broadway.
