The musical Wicked is based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel of the same name, and also draws on the cult 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. It reveals the true story behind the Witches of Oz, prior to Dorothy's arrival from Kansas.
Whatever you do, don't call her The Wicked Witch of the West. Wicked claims that Dorothy's nemesis didn’t start out evil - she was just reacting against corruption in Oz. The hit musical transports its audience to Shiz University, where Elphaba Thropp and Glinda Upland are friends with extraordinary magical powers.
But can their friendship survive love struggles, opposing views and Elphaba's sinister destiny?
As the two witches grow apart, a conflict is brewing which will shake the foundations of the Emerald City. Wicked's enchanting set design is supported by some thrilling aerial choreography and truly breathtaking special effects. This fascinating musical turns your preconceptions of Oz upside down – the perfect evening for anyone who’s ever wondered what came before the Yellow Brick Road.
Wicked launched on Broadway in late 2003, and recouped all costs within 14 months. The show was rapturously received by audiences and critics; in 2004 it won 3 Tony Awards, 6 Drama Desk Awards and 4 Outer Critics Circle Awards.
