Tony Bennett is a world-renowned singer with a career spanning six decades, having reached as many generations. Perhaps best known for his signature tune "I left my heart in San Francisco", he has had a string of hit records, from 1950s smashes like "Because of You", to 1990s duets with contemporary pop acts like Elvis Costello and KD Lang.
Bennett has shown remarkable commercial and artistic stealth, achieving popular success whilst refusing to abandon his love of the Great American Songbook, even when at times this genre proved unfashionable with young mainstream audiences.
Recently, Bennett's music has seen another meteoric rise in acclaim, with five Grammy awards in the 1990s, for records such as his tributes to Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra and Fred Astaire. He has delivered the sounds of traditional jazz-inflected tones to a new generation of inspired listeners.
