The Second City is a long-running, fast-paced comedy revue featuring original scenes, songs and improvisations. Based in Chicago, and with offshoot troupes in other cities, Second City found its way to Las Vegas in 2001 and was recently voted as 'one of the top five shows in the city'.
Second City evolved from the Compass Players, a 1950's cabaret-style revue show started by undergraduates at the University of Chicago. The troupe chose the self-mocking name 'The Second City' from the title of a disdainful article about Chicago that appeared in The New Yorker magazine in 1952.
In 1959 the first Second City revue show premiered. The style of comedy has changed with the times, but the format has remained constant. A number of well-known performers launched their careers as part of the troupe and later moved on to television and movie work.
Some of these alumni include Joan Rivers, Peter Boyle, Bill Murray and Steve Carell. Second City Las Vegas also operates a Training Center, offering classes in the creation of sketch comedy, improvisation, and comedic writing.
