The massive popularity of the new movie adaptation of Hairspray has led to a rise in the number of people clamouring to see it on the stage.
Sales have risen considerably due to the new movie starring John Travolta, Michelle Pheifer, Christopher Walken and newcomer Nikki Blonsky, which premiered this week.
The show is now playing to Neil Simon Theatre audience filled to 100.66% capacity and the gross takings are up by $50,000 to $80,000, compared to the week before the movie premiered.
Hairspray is still lagging behind the other forerunners for highest-grossing show on Broadway, which are Wicked at number one ($1,468,400), The Lion King in second place ($1,291,898), Jersey Boys coming in third ($1,211,053), Mary Poppins has the fourth highest ($1,191,101) and Beauty and the Beast is at number five. ($1,095,124).
