On August 1st the national tour of High School Musical officially launched at Chicago’s Lasalle Bank Theatre; directed by Jeff Calhoun and produced by Disney Theatrical Productions the stage show is an adaptation of the original Disney Channel smash hit movie.
Premiered in 2006 on the Disney Channel, "High School Musical" set household ratings records for the Disney Channel in several countries, the soundtrack has been certified triple Platinum and six of its singles Gold certified.
High School Musical centers on the unlikely friendship between popular boy Troy and the smart Gabriella who decide to audition for the high school musical against the wishes of many of their friends, the story follows the group students as they struggle with issues of popularity, love, education, and the value of friends and family.
Broadway stars Ron Bohmer (The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Phantom of the Opera, The Woman in White) and Ellen Harvey (Thou Shalt Not, The Music Man, tour of Mamma Mia!) appear in the musical as Basketball Coach Bolton and drama teacher Ms. Darbus.
The stage show also features a book, adapted from the original movie script, by David Simpatico.
All the songs from the original soundtrack are featured in the show along with two new songs written especially for the stage show.
