Mould-breaking Broadway musical Rent is ending its run after 12 years.
June 1 will see the last ever performance of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical, which has been playing at the Nederlander Theatre for the duration of its run.
Written by the late Jonathan Larson and based on Giacomo Puccini's classic 1896 opera, La Boheme, the rock musical tells the tale of a group of young, impoverished artists struggling to find their identities against the back-drop of gritty, modern day New York.
With one of the hottest casts around and a blistering score, Rent touches on several controversial issues that affect young people such as AIDS, homelessness and drug addiction and was one of the first Broadway musicals to feature lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender characters.
Rent opened in New York City on February 13, 1996 at the New York Theatre Workshop before moving to Broadway's Nederlander Theatre on April 29 later that year.
It went on to win an American Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize and has since been made into a full length motion picture.
Despite its contentious narrative and provocative themes, Rent has become one of the most well-loved and inspirational shows on Broadway.
