Adriane Lenox will make her debut in Chicago on Broadway tonight, August 7, in the role on Matron ‘Mama’ Morton.
Fellow stars Michelle DeJean (Roxie Hart) and Tom Wopat (Billy Flynn) will also be starting today and tomorrow, respectively, though all three are staying for limited summer engagements only.
Lenxon received a Tony, Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel Awards for her performance as Mrs Muller in the national tour of Doubt. Her other Broadway credits include Ain’t Misbehavin’, Dreamgirls, and Kiss Me, Kate.
DeJean has appeared in national tours of Chicago, West Side Story, Mame and Jesus Christ Superstar. Wopat is perhaps best known for his seven seasons on Dukes of Hazard, has released several successful albums, and has appeared on Broadway in Guys and Dolls, Chicago, and 42nd Street.
The long-running revival of Kander and Ebb’s musical, Chicago opened again in 1997 and won multiple awards for stars Bebe Neuwirth and James Naughton. The original production was directed and choreographed by the late Bob Fosse.
Chicago is playing at the Ambassador Theatre, at 219 West 49th Street.
