Madonna's latest album release, Hard Candy, has knocked Mariah Carey's comeback effort and given the iconic popstar her seventh number one album.

The top-selling female recording artist in the US has brought Carey's two week rein at the top spot with E=MC2 to an end – she will spend next week's Billboard album chart at the number two spot.

The Queen of Pop's successful career has already spanned 26 years and she's showing no signs of hanging up her microphone just yet, with album sales for Hard Candy totalling 280,000 in the first week.

Hard Candy follows up the huge success of her early albums which established her as one of the most popular performers of all time, such as her self-titled debut, Like A Prayer and Bedtime Stories, and her more recent work - Music, American Life, and Confessions On A Dancefloor.

Madonna is currently promoting her new album, and will soon endeavour on a world tour, Sticky and Sweet, which will include stops across Europe and North America later this year.
