Roger Federer has moved a step closer to Pete Sampras’ 14 grand slam title record by beating youngster Novak Djokovic at the US Tennis Open – his fourth consecutive US Open title and his 12th grand slam victory.
The Swiss player has won three of the four major competitions for the second year running, and the 26-year-old is by no means too old to contest Sampras’ title collection.
However, although the game was won in straight sets (7-6, 7-6 and 6-4), Federer’s 20-year-old Serbian opponent – who has risen rapidly to his position as number three seed – was no pushover.
The now number three seed is being tipped as a potentially formidable force for future tournaments.
In the women’s tournament, Belgian player and world number one, Justine Henin, beat Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia in two sets (6-1 and 6-3) to win her second US Open title and her seventh grand slam competition.
Kuznetsova won the competition in 2004.
