David Beckham, who started for LA Galaxy for the first time on August 15, has scored his first goal for the team against D.C. United.
A trademark free kick bounded into the goal, much to the surprise of the goal keeper who had spent several minutes lining up the wall.
Beckham, who was handed the captaincy for the match, scored from 26 yards to the delight of team mates, manager and fans.
He also provided the assist for Landon Donovan’s goal, which was scored just minutes after his opener and led the team to a 2-0 Superliga semifinal victory.
Beckham had only played 37 minutes in the club’s two previous games due to an ankle injury.
However, he was very pleased with goal and said afterwards: "I had the feeling that I was going to score."
The match was only witnessed by a half-full stadium of fans, but the final, which will take place August 29 against Pachuca, is expected to draw a much bigger crowd.
The winning team will take home $1 million.
