Actor, comedian and Yankees fan Billy Crystal will be marking his 60th birthday by playing for the New York Yankees.
The City Slickers star will wear the number 60 as he steps out for the Yankees tonight in Tampa for an exhibition game against the Pittsburg Pirates.
Crystal, whose birthday is actually on Friday, has had to sign a one-day contract to play for the Yankees, and that had to specially approved by Bud Selig, the Commissioner of Major League Baseball.
"I've been waiting 50 years for this call," Crystal said in a statement, "I'm overwhelmed by the generosity of the Yankees and commissioner Selig.
"I know this'll be tougher than the Broadway Softball League, but I'm looking forward to helping the younger players - which by the way, is all of them."
Crystal, who is crazy about baseball and was a good player in high school, is one of the Yankees most famous supporters; he even directed and produced 61*, a movie about the World Series winning Yankees side of 1961. It focused on Roger Maris, the player who broke Babe Ruth's single season home-run record the same year.
"Billy Crystal has done a lot for this organization," said Yankees manager Joe Giradi, who admits he has not yet decided where to play the Hollywood star.
"He's always been a big part of it. This is our way of rewarding him, saying thanks for everything you've done."
