Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic caused a stir at the Rogers Cup in Montreal on August 12 by beating number one seed, Roger Federer, to the title.
Pundits are now considering Djokovic as a contender for the US Open title, which will take place from August 27 to September 9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
Djokovic, who is now seeded in third place, beat Andy Roddick during the Canadian competition and then went on to beat Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals.
He described his surprise victory over Federer as “incredible”.
However, Swiss player Federer does not appear ruffled, having won both the Rogers Cup and the US Open last year, and having earned his fifth victory in as many years at Wimbledon 2007.
Despite telling the TorStar News Service that he was impressed by the young player’s performance, he remains calmly confident in the lead up to the US Open.
