Justine Henin is through to the semi-finals at Wimbledon after beating Serena Williams in a tough encounter, 6-4 3-6 6-3.
Williams appeared to be hindered by a calf injury she picked up in her previous match against Daniela Hantuchova, but it did not stop her from playing some magnificent tennis; coming back, after losing the first set, to break Henin twice and grab the second set.
The deciding set looked to belong to Henin as she went up 5-1 against Williams.
However, the former champion would not give up and fought back to 5-3, but was ultimately unable to prevent Henin from taking the set and the match.
"I was a bit nervous at the end," said Henin. "Mentally it was very difficult so I'm very happy to come through. It's the kind of win that gives me a lot of confidence for this tournament."
Serena Williams revealed later that, along with her calf strain, she had been suffering from a sprained thumb during the match, which had affected her backhand.
"My leg is doing a lot better, but when I slipped in the third set [against Hantuchova], I hurt my thumb," said Serena. "I'm definitely not one hundred percent; I was probably at forty or fifty maximum."
"Considering the circumstances, I think I did pretty well." "If I had been healthy I think I would have won, definitely."
Serena may be out of Wimbledon, but her sister Venus is through to the quarter finals after a straight sets victory over Maria Sharapova.
Venus, seeded 28th in the tournament, knocked out second seed Sharapova in only one hour, 29 minutes, aided by her fearsome first serves and a raft of unforced errors from Sharapova.
Venus plays her quarter final match against fifth seed Kuznetsova on Thursday.
