According to reports, Washington Redskins coach and president, Joe Gibbs, has decided to resign from his current position at the club.
Mr Gibbs signed a new five-year contract worth $27.5 million in 2004 and previously affirmed he would see it through to the end.
However, today's news follows the team's 35-14 defeat in the first-round playoffs against NFL rivals the Seattle Seahawks on January 5.
Mr Gibbs was admitted into the football Hall of Fame having led the team to three Super Bowls between 1981 and 1992.
During his second term with the Redskins the team reached postseason in two of his four seasons.
The head coach also helped to keep the team focused after the tragic murder of Redskins safety, Sean Taylor, on December 3, 2007.
As a result, the Redskins won their final four regular season matches after the funeral, moving from 5-7 to 9-7 to qualify for the last remaining playoff spot.
Mr Gibbs described the season as the "toughest" of his career.
Although it is thought that he will remain with the club in an advisory capacity, the Redskins are likely to start looking for a full replacement as soon as his resignation is made official later today, with Gregg Williams and Al Saunders cited as potential candidates.
