Amelie Mauresmo’s championship reign came to an end yesterday when she lost in the fourth round to Nicole Vaidesova, 7-6 8-6 4-6 6-1.
Rain has greatly disrupted play at this year’s Wimbledon; it took almost four hours for the 14th seed to defeat the championship holder, after three rain breaks and a half-empty Centre Court.
The 18 year old fought back against the Frenchwoman from 5-3 down in the first set, and gained much from the 4th seed’s 14 double faults.
"It was a great win today," said the Czech teenager. “I'm not a huge fan of grass and it's always a huge challenge for me but it's fun to challenge yourself every now and again.
"I feel like I'm improving every match which is good. I haven't even asked myself if I can win the title. I'm just taking it match by match."
Two breaks put Vaidesova in total control and a frustrated Mauresmo smashed a ball out of the stadium in anger as she saw her title slip away in the final game.
Weather permitting, Vaidisova will play Ana Ivanovic in the quarter-finals after the Serbian sixth seed beat Nadia Petrova 6-1 2-6 6-4.
