Tim Henman has fallen to number 92 – his lowest position for 11 years - in the player rankings following another first-round defeat at the Cincinnati Masters.
He lost to Argentinean player Juan Ignacio Chela (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) in the opening round of the Western and Southern Financial Group Masters as a result of back problems, spelling his eighth first-round defeat in the 11 tournaments he has taken part in this year.
Having been knocked out in the second round of Wimbledon earlier this summer, Henman is now focusing on the forthcoming US Tennis Open, which will take place from August 27 to September 9.
Other players through to the second round include Tomas Berdych who beat Benjamin Becker (6-3, 6-4), Ivan Ljubicic who won against Amer Delic (1-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3), Mikhail Youzhny who beat Dominik Hrbaty (6-3, 6-1), Carlos Moya who won against David Nalbandian (7-6 (4), 7-6 (2)), Jurgen Melzer who defeated Ivo Karlovic (7-6 (4), 7-6 (2)) and David Ferrer who beat John Isner (7-6 (3), 6-3).
Having been denied the Rogers Cup in Montreal on August 12, top three seeds Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick are hoping for wins in the lead up to the US Open.
