Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy has pleaded guilty to two charges related to betting on games he officiated.

He has been accused of placing bets on games that he refereed over the last two seasons, including the Boston Celtics game against Philadelphia on December 13, at which Boston won and Donaghy profited.

Donaghy is also being investigated for influencing games by divulging information about refereeing schedules to high-stakes gamblers and by calling fouls that were not genuine.

The inquiry was launched on June 20, when FBI investigators informed the NBA that an official had been wagering large sums of money on a number of games during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.

The referee resigned shortly after this (July 9), having refereed in the league for 13 seasons.

The extent of his profiteering is still unclear and his sentence, which will be decided November 9, could be up to 25 years in combination with several fines.

Defense attorney John Laura told The Associated Press that "Tim deeply regrets his involvement in this matter and especially the pain it has caused his family, friends and co-workers.''
