Serena Williams will return to the tennis circuit later this month when she takes part in the Pilot Pen tournament in New Haven.
Williams has been out of action with a thumb injury since Wimbledon, which saw her reach the quarter finals, and her sister Venus take the title for the fourth time.
The Pilot Pen is seen as the warm up for the US Open, the last grand slam of the season, and Serena’s return could be a sign that she is serious about turning her eight Grand Slams into nine.
The Pilot Penn will also see three-time Grand Slam champion Lindsay Davenport make her return to professional tennis - she took a break at the end of 2006 when she announced she was pregnant with her second child.
