The Midsummer Classic at AT&T Park on Tuesday saw the American League extend their unbeaten streak against the National League, winning the All-Star game 5-4.
An inside the park home run by Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki along with conventional home runs by Carl Crawford and Victor Martinez helped the American League to 11 games unbeaten; boasting 10 victories and one tie in 2002.
Despite trailing 5-2, the National League picked itself up in the ninth innings to create a tight end to the game.
Washington's Dmitri Young singled off Baltimore second baseman Brian Roberts, and then Alfonso Soriano got a home run off Seattle's J.J. Putz, creating some momentum that saw three walks load the bases.
But the American League's one run victory was sealed by Francisco Rodriguez who lured Philadelphia's Aaron Rowand into a harmless fly to right field.
After the match Ken Griffey praised the National League's performance, "You look at the effort the guys put in the ninth inning. To battle back against two of the best stoppers in the league, that's pretty good."
After their victory, the American League now go into this year's World Series with home-field advantage.
