New York Yankees star Jason Giambi will not be suspended or fined despite having admitted using steroids.
Commissioner Bud Selig has pardoned the player after Giambi agreed to Selig’s request that he take part in talks about the performance-enhancing drugs with former Senator George Mitchell, who has been leading an investigation into steroid use in baseball.
Selig also commended the player for his “public-service work” and for his cooperation and frankness about the drugs.
A comment from Giambi during an interview with USA Today brought the issue into the open and led to talks with Mitchell on July 13 in New York.
He agreed to speak about his own steroid used but refused to name or implicate other users.
Giambi has donated $50,000 to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America and $50,000 to the Harlem chapter of the RBI program.
