The Color Purple: cast announced for first national tour

CHICAGO, IL

The cast for a forthcoming touring production of The Color Purple has been revealed, with the first national tour of the show kicking off at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre April 17-July 22.

LaToya London from TV’s American Idol will play Nettie, Michelle Williams from pop group Destiny’s Child has the role of Shug Avery, and Jeanette Bayardelle will be Celie, a part she has also played in the Broadway production.

The Color Purple is be based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Alice Walker and the Steven Spielberg film of the same name; it tells the story of Celie, a young African American girl, as she deals with racism, poverty and sex discrimination in the early 1900s and goes on a journey of self-discovery.

Tickets are now on sale for the Broadway and touring production of The Color Purple.
