This year's drama fit for a Pulitzer after all

Rabbit Hole has been announced as the winner of this year’s Pulitzer Prize for Drama, following rumors that there may not be one for the second year running.

It was a contentious issue in the theatre world this year, as many critics believed, as was the case last year, that there have been no dramatic plays worthy of the esteemed accolade, of which previous winners include Tennessee Williams for A Street Car Named Desire and Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman.

But, David Lindsay-Abaire’s touching play about recovering after the loss of a child has proven the cynics wrong, chosen by the board over the three nominations made by the Pulitzer jury – Orpheus X by Rinde Eckert, Eisa Davis’ Bulrusher and Elliot, a Solidier’s Fugue by Quiara Alegria Hudes. In order to win the prize without being nominated by the jury, it had to receive a majority vote.

Rabbit Hole opened on Broadway in February 2006 at the Manhattan Theatre Club's Biltmore Theatre to rave reviews.
