Woody Allen will direct his first ever opera next year as the first event on the Los Angeles Opera 2007-2008 calendar.
The New York-based film writer, director and actor is known for his satirical and ironic observational comedy, but will be trying his hand at something completely new with Gianni Schicchi, part of Puccini’s Il Trittico, a trio of one-act operas.
“I have no idea what I am doing” he said. “But incompetence has never prevented me from plunging in with enthusiasm.”
Gianni Schicchi is set in medieval Florence and is Puccini’s only comedy. “To have Woody Allen direct is a match made in heaven” said general director of Los Angeles Opera, Placido Domingo.
