The world-famous New York Yankees have been one of Major League Baseball’s dominant teams, winning more championships than any other team. Their record of twenty-six World Series and thirty-nine League Pennants is unsurpassed.
Established in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles, the team moved to New York two years later and adopted the name Highlanders. However, the newspaper nicknames of the team as "Yankees" stuck, with the New York team adopting the name permanently several years later.
The Yankees were also home to the legendary baseball player Babe Ruth, having lured him away from the Boston Red Sox in 1920. His success with the team is such that Yankee Stadium, the team’s current home, is dubbed "The House That Ruth Built" in honor of his achievements.
