The Rockets joined the NBA as an expansion team for the 1967-68 season. Originally based in San Diego, the Rockets moved to Houston in 1970 and have stayed there ever since. Today, the Houston Rockets play in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference and can boast of past successes including two NBA Championships, four Conference titles and four Division titles.
Since moving to Houston in 1971, the Rockets have changed venues three times to arrive at their current home the Toyota Center. With facilities such as seating for up to 18,500 fans, dining and premier suites, it has already been the site of two recent play-off attempts in the 2003-04 and 2004-5 seasons. The Rockets hope it will be the home of many future successes to come.
The Rockets have had a number of members promoted to the Basketball Hall of Fame in their franchise history, and as of 2006 have retired five numbers to commemorate past contributors to the team. A brother team of the WBNAs Houston Comets, the Houston Rockets work and hope for future repeats of their Championships of 1994 and 1995.
