The Spurs have been located in San Antonio since 1973, and are the only major sports franchise to be located in the area. Originally established as the Dallas Chaparrals, the franchise has remained in Texas throughout its lifetime. It first became known as the Spurs upon moving to San Antonio, and has retained the name to this day. Following the collapse of the American Basketball Association, the Spurs joined the NBA in 1975.
The San Antonio Spurs enjoy a close relationship with fans and community of the area, and this has bolstered the team to achieve significant success in the modern era. As the San Antonio Spurs the team has gone on to win three NBA Championships, three conference titles and fifteen division titles. Based out of the AT&T Center since 2002, the new arena has seen the Spurs claim two of their three Championship titles.
In addition to their success on the Division, Conference and Championship level, the San Antonio Spurs have also had three of their members admitted to the Basketball Hall of Fame. They have also retired five numbers in honour of former contributors. With exceptional fan support and a strong team, expectations are high for the Spurs’ success in the 21st century.
