Established in 1961, the Wizards are currently based in Washington and have one Championship, three Conference titles and seven Division titles to their name. Playing in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference, they were first known as the Chicago Packers following their creation. Since that time, they have changed names and locations five times, eventually arriving in Washington in 1974 and becoming the Washington Wizards of today in 1997.
The Wizards have been based out of the Verizon Center since the year of their name change and currently enjoy facilities including seating for 20,000 fans, premium suites and dining. The Verizon Center was also the site for the Washington Wizards first playoff victory for twenty-three years in May of the 2005-06 season.
As part of their success, including the historic NBA Championship win in the 1977-78 season, the Washington Wizards have had five past members inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame. They have also retired three numbers to commemorate past contributors. The Wizards continue to work towards future achievements, with a past history of over twenty-two play-off places since their opening 1961-62 season.
