Originally starting professional play as one of the charter members of the American Football League, the San Diego Chargers joined the NFL following the merger between the two leagues in 1970. The Chargers have gone on to win six Division Championships and one Conference Championship in the NFL up to 2006. They have also made over seven play-off appearances over the same period.
Based out of the Qualcomm Stadium for over thirty-five years, the San Diego Chargers currently enjoy a home seating capacity of over 71,000 fans. Their stadium has been renamed a number of times in the past, and currently is host to three different sports teams.
With a long history of professional football, the San Diego Chargers have had seven of their former members elevated to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. They have also retired two numbers in honour of past contributors. With strong performances from their team in the recent 2004 and 2005 seasons, San Diego Charger fans are expectant of continued success in the seasons to come.
