Northeastern University has a long history of outstanding sports teams and can boast NFL star Dan Ross and the NBA’s Reggie Lewis as former students.
The Northeastern Huskies hockey team plays in the highly competitive Hockey East conference of the NCAA’s Division I, where it takes on the likes of Boston, Maine and New Hampshire.
The Huskies used to play in te ECAC; the women took the ECAC title three times, in 1988, 1989 and 1997 and the men were ECAC champs in 1982. Since playing in Hockey East, the Huskies have picked up one title - Hockey East champions in 1988, but are still a force to be reckoned with, causing upset in the regular season, and making it to the NCAA in 1994.
The Huskies play their home games at Matthews Arena, which can hold up to 6,000 fans, and take part in the annual Beanpot tournament, which is a competition between the four Boston-area colleges Northeastern has taken the title four times since the tournament began in 1952.
