The notable Colorado Avalanche was formed in 1972, formerly playing for Quebec under the name the Nordiques. They won the Avco World Trophy in 1977, and joined the NHL in 1979.
After success and making it to the postseason for seven years back-to-back, the Nordiques saw a dip in their fortunes, and they fell to the bottom of the league. In 1995 a move was brought about and the team became the Colorado Avalanche of the Pepsi Center. Amazingly, the "Avs" managed to win the Stanley Cup as early as 1996.
Throughout their time as a team, the Colorado Avalanche has proved a force to be reckoned with, winning 2 Stanley Cups, 2 Conference Championships, and 8 Division Championships.
