Formerly known as the Alberta Oilers from their founding in 1972, the team became the Edmonton Oilers when they began to play all of their home games there. In 1979 the team joined the NFL from the World Hockey Association.
Full of fantastic young players including the legend Wayne Gretzky, the Edmonton Oilers soon became one of the greatest hockey teams ever, winning the Stanley Cup four times in five years, and dominating the NHL throughout much of the 80s.
In 1988 however, Wayne Gretzky and other key players were traded to the Los Angeles Kings in a $15 million dollar deal. Following this the Edmonton Oilers fortunes took a downturn, and in 1989, for the first time since 1982 the Oilers were out of the playoffs in the first round.
The Edmonton Oilers battled on though, winning the Stanley Cup in 1990, and more recently they approached the 2006/7 season as defending Western Conference Champions. Come on Oilers!
