The Phoenix Coyotes were founded in 1972 as the Winnipeg Jets and play in brick red, sand, black and white.
Under their former guise, the Coyotes were the most successful in the World Hockey Association, having won three Avco World Trophies, the league championship, and made it to the finals five times out of the WHAs seven seasons.
The team then joined the NHL and was sold to buyers out of town, moving to Arizona in 1996 and becoming the Phoenix Coyotes.
The Coyotes proved to adjust considerably well to their new circumstances, posting six back-to-back .500 or better seasons and making it to the playoffs.
Later, the Glendale Arena was built for the Phoenix Coyotes and in 2003 they moved in. A further exciting development in recent years has been the team’s part-ownership and coaching by arguably the greatest ice hockey player of all time Wayne Gretzky.
