Les Liaisons Dangereuses is a ballet based on Frenchman, Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' 1782 epistolary novel of the same name. Set in 18th century France, Les Liaisons Dangereuses depicts French aristocracy just before the French Revolution, focusing on Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont; two rivals who use sex as a weapon to humiliate and degrade others while constantly trying to get one up on each other.
The book was translated into a dance by choreographer David Nixon in 1991 and tells the story from the Marquise’s point of view, using the spoken word and the music of Antonio Vivaldi. Vivaldi was chosen because his music is from a period very close to the setting of the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses.
