Orignally staged in 1875, Swan Lake tells the timeless tale of Odette, the princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse and destined to be girl by day and bird by night.
Meanwhile, fleeing his family who are forcing him to marry for status and not for love, a prince is wondering the forest one night and comes across the swan maiden. They dance and when Prince Siegfried learns of her sad tale he takes pity on her and they fall in love. A host of other swan maidens captured by the sorcerer, Von Rothbart, join Odette on the lake which was formed out of her parents' tears when she was taken away from them.
Siegfried threatens to kill Von Rothbart but Odette intercedes, for to kill him would seal her fate as a swan forever. Only true love can break the spell put upon her and audiences are kept enthralled as the tale reaches its climax, begging the question of whether true love will conquer all.
Incorporating drama and romance and accompanied by some of Tchaikovsky's most romantic and memorable music, Swan Lake is an unforgettable, timeless classic.
