Based on the smash hit, multi-award winning 2000 film, Billy Elliot the musical has measured up to the successes of its roots. It tells the story of a young boy living in a mining town in northern England during a strike which is having a devastating effect on his working class family.
However, amongst the harshness of reality, Billy finds a life-changing passion when he accidentally stumbles across a ballet class one day. Billy's father objects to his new-found dream and forbids him to go, forcing Billy to fight for his destiny. Not only does he have to deal with the problems of growing up in turbulent times in addition to those of any normal kid, but Billy also has to find the strength if he is to reach beyond his place in the world to follow his heart's desire.
Directed by Stephen Daldry who also directed the film and with music composed by Sir Elton John, Billy Elliot the musical will not disappoint lovers of the film or newcomers to the story. It has won countless awards, including 4 Laurence Olivier Awards, one of which was for Best Musical, the Theatre Goer's Choice Award and the Critic's Circle Theatre Award.
