Hairspray is based on John Waters' cult 1988 movie of the same name. The show premiered on Broadway in 2002, and features music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman. Hairspray won 8 trophies at the following year's Tony Awards, including 'Best Musical', 'Best Book of a Musical' and 'Best Costume Design'.
