Detroit, Michigan is one if the United States' most musical cities, and can boast being the home of motown with artists like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin all signing up to Detroit's label, Motown records.
Detroit is also known as Rock City, because some of the biggest rock acts from the 1960s and 1970s came out of Detroit – namely Alice Cooper, Bob Seger and the group Kiss, who wrote the song Detroit Rock City about their hometown. Detroit is also the birthplace of techno and spawned 'garage rock', in the 1990s thanks to the national recognition received by The White Stripes, the Dirtbombs and Von Bondies. The city hosts several annual music events, including the Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival and is home to two of the country's top live music venues – the DTE Energy Music Theatre and The Palace of Auburn Hills.
Detroit has five major league sports teams – the Pistons and Detroit Shock are both in the NBA, the city's MLB side are The Detroit Tigers, who play at Comerica Park, the Detroit Lions, who are in the NFL and play at Ford Field. But it is hockey fans that Detroit is known for, hence its nickname, 'Hockeytown', and the team they are backing is the Detroit Redwings.
