New York

New York, the Big Apple, is known as one of the biggest and best entertainment capitals in the world. With 8.1 million people, it is the largest and most populous city in the US and gets much of its cultural richness and diversity from immigration and its cultural enclaves such as Harlem and China Town. It is a hive of performing arts, music, sports teams and history.

NYC has a team in each of the major American professional sports leagues, including the New York Yankees who have won 26 MLB championships and play at the Yankee Stadium; and the New York Mets, who are the city’s other MLB team. The NFL Giants have won 6 championships and share the Giants Stadium with fellow NFL team the New York Jets. The Rangers and Islanders play in the NHL and have their home rink at Madison Square Garden which is also the home ground of NYC's NBA side, the New York Knicks.

Madison Square Garden is also a hot spot for all the biggest music acts that come to the city, as is the Carnegie Hall. New York is well-known for its jazz and blues music as well as indie-rock, having produced such bands as The Strokes and Talking Heads. Perhaps one of its main attractions is Broadway and its 39 professional theatres, where you can see such favorite musicals as The Lion King and Phantom of the Opera. In addition is off-Broadway, for more avant-garde and challenging theatre.

The Lincoln Centre for Performing Arts is the largest performing arts centre in the US and features jazz, the New York City Opera, New York City Philharmonic, the New York City Ballet and the Metropolitan Opera. Thomas Wolfe said of New York that “culture just seems to be in the air, like part of the weather.” Come to New York and see for yourself.
