The city is a major national centre for the arts, featuring Arena Stage which is dedicated to American theatre, the Studio Theatre and National Theatre also play host to world-class performances.
The John F. Kennedy Theater for the Performing Arts, which has a concert hall and opera house hosts the National Symphony Orchestra, The Washington National Opera, The Washington Ballet and a range of other attractions. Washington D.C. is known for its appreciation of jazz and blues music, having been home to the legendary Duke Ellington, and features regular performances at its many music venues. It was also the birthplace of ‘go-go’ music, and the epicentre of punk, with bands such as Fugazi and Minor Threat hailing from the city.
The nation’s capital is home to many major sports teams, including the Washington Nationals who play Major League Baseball at the RFK Stadium and the NFL’s Washington Redskins who play at FedEx Field. The Washington Wizards of the NBA, NHL Washington Capitals, and WNBA team the Washington Mystics all play at the Verizon Centre and are in the Eastern Conferences. Soccer and Lacrosse also feature in Washington’s sporting calendar.
